The second edition of Master class, organised by proHolz Austria in Slovenia and Croatia has finished in middle June, where 35 students from architectural and civil engineering faculties from University of Ljubljana and Zagreb were participating. Interdisciplinary student's teams designed the concept for an urban redensification with wood under the supervision of the professors from Graz, Ljubljana and Zagreb.

Transforming the cities with wood

The aim of the Master class was rebutted the prejudice against wooden constructions in the city. In Ljubljana, the students focused on finding the solutions for transformation of a degraded detached housing settlement of Stare Moste, located in the Eastern part of Ljubljana. The actual situation of the single-family ground floor houses should be concentrated with the two floors residential buildings for approximately 400 inhabitants. The solutions had to be made in a modular construction with the CLT elements. In Zagreb, the students had to transform the central located formal industrial area in a size of 2000 m2 into a residential and an office building complex. The focus was on designing the multi-storey buildings in wooden and concrete composite construction. Master class stimulate the teamwork between students of architecture and civil engineering under the supervision of the experienced experts.

Practice in Austria

The winners with the best final projects got the invitation from proHolz Austria to make an one month practice at TU Graz and in an architectural office Gangoly and Kristiner Architekten in Graz.

Our plan is to continue with the Master class also in next year, the format can also be extended to Czech Republic and Slovakia.  In Slovenia and Croatia, the wish of collaborating professors is to again implemented the proHolz courses for planners in practice.
