EU's Climate Action should support the long life cycle of wood

24.09.2014

The Wood Action Days (22-26 September) in Brussels mark the beginning of a new dialogue between the European wood working industry and European decision makers.

The Wood Action Days (22-26 September) in Brussels mark the beginning of a new dialogue between the European wood working industry and European decision makers. More than 40 members of the European Parliament, 20 professional associations and many experts meet to discuss possibilities to improve the competitiveness of the sector. Seminars and workshops focus on environmental aspects, climate change, competitiveness and rural development.

At the Wood Action Days the manifesto of the European wood working industry for the years 2014 – 2019 is going to be presented: "At a decisive moment in time our manifesto is laying the foundation for a cooperation within the EU in order to face economic and social problems", says Måns Johansson, President of the European Association of the Saw Mill Industry. "We are happy about the attention we get from the new institutions and about the participation of a large delegation of the European Parliament during the Wood Action Days. This is an important step towards the  recognition of the contribution of the European wood working industry to an economic upswing and its effort to create new jobs."

"In the past the goals of the climate and energy policies of the EU were contradictory, especially when it came to the use of wood and timber.  EU's climate action policy should aim at supporting the long life-cycle of wood instead of hindering it's use and application. The EU, however,  has promoted the short life-cycle of bio-energy in the past", says Ladislaus Döry, Vice-Chairman of CEI-Bois (European Confederation of the Woodworking Industries) and President of the European Panel Federation.
